In 1916, the Battle of the Somme took place. It was one of the bloodiest battle of the WW1. If you do the Remembrance tour, you will walk on the soldier's footsteps who fought and died during this Battle from July to November 1916. This battle affected a very large part of the departement from Beaumont-Hamel & Bapaume in the north of Chilly, south of Chaulnes. The British held the battle front line from its northern end as far as Maricourt while the French held the south accoss the valley of the River Somme. The battle began the 24th June with an Allied artillery barrage that continued whitout interruption by day or night, designed to demolish the networks of barbed wire barring the way and to flatten the German positions. The inadequate artillery bombardment meant that the surface fortifications were not destroyed and the underground networks survived undamaged.... The 1st July marks the beginning of the offensive. The british advance, after four and a half months of Battle, was approximatively 12km and between 5 & 8 km for the less numerous French. of approximatively 3 million men in the line during this period some 1.2 million were killed, wounded, or missing in action. .... We will remember them ....
